Catur Yuga – Cultures in dialog

Catur Yuga in Indonesian means: In the wheel of time. Done in a series of conceptual paintings, this cycle is Andreas Straub’s research about the topic of time. The artist uses different media which permeate and complement each other: black-and-white drawings, spontaneous notations of reverberations or intuitions, and large-scale painting using symbolic aspects of the colors red, yellow, black, green and white. Thus, he creates spatial orientation and ties the spectator’s experience of time to space.

The cycle developed during a cultural dialog between artists from Basle and Bali (Indonesia) from 1994 to 1998, initiated by the Museum der Kulturen in Basle and advised by ethnologist Urs Ramseyer. Within this setting, Andreas Straub was simultaneously observing and documenting, researching and inventing.
